The Minister of Health has dismissed the Board of the Southern District Health Board – replacing it with a Commissioner.

The SDHB is currently facing a deficit of $27 million.

It is forecast to blow out to between $30 and $42 million  by the end of the next financial year.

Minister Jonathan Coleman said no other DHB has failed like the SDHB has, in terms of keeping to its financial constraints.

He has installed Dunedin local Kathy Grant as Commissioner. Grant claimed she will bring significant local knowledge to the role.

Grant has indicted she would like two deputies, including current board member Richard Thomson, the other being Graham Crombie.
