The Southland BMX club will be hosting its Mainland South event this coming weekend, with more than 100 young riders coming to Invercargill to compete.
The club hosted the 2025 BMX New Zealand National Championships last year and now has one of the premium tracks in the country.

Club president David Sinclair said Invercargill was very lucky to have such a great track, that was built two years ago in time for the national event.

Otherwise know as ‘The Big Dance,’ the nationals attracted about 600 competitors from throughout New Zealand and Australia, who raced on the Elizabeth Park track.

“We had some of the premium riders of New Zealand at the nationals.”

This weekend’s southern event has attracted riders from Dunedin, Cromwell, Alexandra and Kaitangata clubs.

David said it was a great spectator sport with action coming out of the starting gates every few minutes.

“There are some strong riders out there.”

The Southland club has about 50 members and some of them branch out into other similar sports - such as mountain biking when they get older.
