The South Island Wood Chopping Championships is making a return to the south at the Southland A & P Show on March 7.

The South Island meet will be a main attraction at this year’s show and Southland A & P Show president Paula Bell is thrilled to have chopping part of the 2020 event.

“We love having a diverse range of attractions at the show so there truly is something for everybody,” Mrs Bell said.

The South Island Championships will start at the Northern Tavern at 5pm on Friday, March 6, and resume at the Southland A & P Show on March 7 at 10am.

South IslandWood Chopping Championship spokesman Peter Templeton said the timber sports championships and single saw championships will make for fantastic viewing at this year’s show.

“We’ve got junior champs, open champsand women’s champs in most categories as well as a veteran’s category.”

The choppers would then be putting it all on the line for one of the main events of the day, the interprovincial team’s race.

Southland-Otago will be looking to defend their title at this year’s event, up against the best the South Island has to offer.

One of these is 23-year-old Bradley Pako from Cromwell who has been the one to beat this season.

The champs will wrap up with a prize giving at the Northern Tavern on Saturday evening.
