Local sports teams can win a poolside party with the SBS Bank Southland Sharks.

Splash Palace has opened its annual competition for the third year, offering one team a meet-and-greet with Sharks players and catered party at the pool.

Invercargill City Council Manager Aquatic Services Stephen Cook said more than 50 teams entered last year.

"This has quickly become one of our favourite community initiatives," he said. "We've seen how much it means to the teams, their families and supporters. The pride and excitement from past winners show just how special this experience is for our young people."

Previous winners included Queens Park AFC Jets basketball team and Star Rugby Club Rutledge Electrical Year 5 team.

"Southlanders love their sport. This competition is a great way for Splash Palace to nurture that passion and encourage our young athletes to stay active and engaged in their chosen sport, whatever that may be," Cook said.

"We're looking forward to hearing what makes each team unique and recognising the effort they put into training and playing week after week."

Teams must submit contact details and explain why they deserve to win.

Cook said he was thrilled to have high-calibre athletes involved again.

"Many of our top athletes, including players from the Sharks, Steel and Stags, use our pool as part of their regular training," he said. "We're really lucky to have players from the Sharks giving up their time to visit Splash Palace in a different capacity, as ambassadors and champions for grassroots sport in Southland."

Entries close 5pm Sunday June 7. Teams can enter at Splash Palace, on Facebook or via the website.
