Update Friday22 September, 4:30pm:
Gore: State highway 93 (Old Coach Road) will be closed to all traffic from 4:00pm today (Friday 22 September). Gore District Council staff will be laying sandbags across the road, just north of Mataura at the flood banks, as a precaution given the predicted peak of the Mataura River tonight. Gore District Roading Asset Manager Murray Hasler said when the river’s peak is predicted to reach 4.1m above normal at Gore it triggers the need for the gap in the flood banks to be closed. “We know from experience the river inundates this area when it’s elevated at Gore. At this stage, the levels are too close to call, so it’s best to err on the side of caution. ” The northern end of SH93 will be closed at Clinton. This means all traffic will be detoured through Gore, Mr Hasler said. While SH1 remains closed between Gore and Mataura, all traffic will be diverted via SH96, Waimumu Road and Charlton Road.
- SH99 has closed between Lorneville and Wallacetown due to flooding.
- SH6 at the Makarewa River is closing soon due to flooding, if you need to travel home, go now.
Update on State Highways:
- SH1 from Gore to Mataura is closed – detour is via SH96 Glencoe highway/Waimumu Road/Charlton Road (light and heavy vehicles).
- SH6 from Parawa to Kingston remains closed and no detour available.
Continue to drive slowly and with extra caution across the state highway network in Southland and expect to come across surface flooding, particularly on:
- SH94 between Riversdale to Gore
- SH96 at Hedgehope
- SH99 near Wallacetown.
Due to flooding, State Highway 1 is closed between the intersections Glendhu Road and Charlton Road. Please delay your journey or consider alternate route.
SH1 Gore to Mataura remains closed. SH1 Broughton Rd to Charlton Rd is now open.
Detour route Light vehicles and heavy vehicles travelling northbound turn left onto State Highway 96, then turn right onto Waimumu Road, then turn left onto Charlton Road, then left onto State Highway 1 Reverse for southbound.
