• Heavy rain and strong winds expected to impact Invercargill and Southland region.
  • Residents advised to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential flooding risks.
  • Forecast predicts cooler temperatures and intermittent rain throughout the week.

Residents in Invercargill and the wider Southland region are being urged to prepare for severe weather conditions as MetService has issued Heavy Rain and Strong Wind Watches.

The Heavy Rain Watch will be in effect from 11:00 PM on Sunday, March 16, until 5:00 PM on Monday, March 17. During this period, heavy rainfall could result in rapid rises in streams and rivers, surface flooding, and slips, which may create hazardous driving conditions.

In addition to the rain warning, a Strong Wind Watch is also in place for the same timeframe. Northwest winds may reach severe gale strength, particularly in exposed areas across Fiordland, Southland, and Stewart Island.

Authorities recommend securing outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds. Residents are also advised to clear gutters and drains to reduce the risk of flooding and to exercise caution when driving, particularly in areas prone to slips or surface water build-up.

Weather forecasts predict a mix of warm and cloudy conditions leading into the weather event. Monday will start warm before rain spreads across the region in the afternoon. Cooler temperatures and intermittent rain are expected on Tuesday, with a slight improvement forecast for Wednesday when rain is expected to ease, giving way to some sunshine.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring weather updates and following advice from local authorities to ensure their safety during this period of unsettled weather.
