Weather

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of the South Island, including Southland, southern Central Otago, and inland Clutha and Dunedin. The warning is in effect from 2pm to 9pm on Tuesday, 18 February.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast throughout the afternoon and evening. Some of these storms could become severe, bringing localised downpours with rainfall rates between 25 to 40 mm per hour. This level of rainfall can lead to surface flooding, flash flooding, and slips, particularly in low-lying areas such as rivers, streams, and narrow valleys.
Motorists are advised to take extra care, as heavy rain could result in hazardous driving conditions, including poor visibility and surface flooding. Those in at-risk areas should stay alert and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
