“Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Southern South Island – Westland, Central Otago, Southern Lakes, Clutha, Southland, and Fiordland.
The Meteorological Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several regions in the southern South Island, including Westland, Central Otago, Southern Lakes, Clutha, Southland, and Fiordland. The watch will be in effect from 3pm to 9pm on Monday, February 13th, as daytime cloud buildups are expected to produce isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms.
According to the forecast, a few of the thunderstorms could be severe, with localised downpours of 25-40mm/hr, potentially causing surface and/or flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, or narrow valleys. The heavy rain may also result in slips.
Drivers are advised to be cautious on the roads, as surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain may make driving conditions hazardous. The public is advised to take necessary precautions and be prepared for potential impacts from the severe thunderstorms.
While any severe thunderstorms that develop will be isolated, the thunderstorm activity is expected to die away late in the evening. The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Stay tuned for further information and updates.”
