A front is forecast to approach the lower South Island Tuesday morning, bringing rain to western areas and another period of west to northwest gales to many parts of the south. The strongest winds are expected to affect Fiordland, Southland, Otago, and Canterbury south of the Rakaia River. A Severe Gale Warning is now in force for these areas.

Strong Wind Warning

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Area: Fiordland south of Doubtful Sound, Southland and Clutha.
Valid: 17 hours from 10:00am Tuesday to 3:00am Wednesday
Forecast: Northwest gales are forecast to be severe at times, with gusts reaching 120km/h. Winds should turn westerly Tuesday afternoon.
