Heavy rain about the Tararua Range should ease this (Friday) morning as the cold front, which brought snow, heavy rain and gale northwesterlies to parts of central and southern New Zealand, moves away to the north.

Meanwhile, a trough is forecast to move across the far south of the South Island from the west today, delivering a period of strong westerly winds to coastal parts of Clutha and Southland including Stewart Island, where a Strong Wind Watch is now in force.
