Northwest gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand
A front over the south Tasman Sea is forecast to move east over the South Island today (Wednesday) and then weaken as it crosses the North Island on Thursday. This front is preceded by a strong north to northwest flow, and followed by strong westerlies. Strong Wind Watches and Warnings are in force for eastern and southern parts of the South Island and also Wellington and Wairarapa.

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Forecast: Severe gale north to northwesterlies with gusts reaching 120 to 130 km/h in exposed places.
Area: Stewart Island
Valid: 23 hours from 9:00am Wednesday to 8:00am Thursday
Forecast: Severe gale north to northwesterlies in exposed places, changing to severe gale westerlies this evening, then easing Thursday morning. During this time, gusts are expected to reach 120 km/h in exposed places.
