Updated 9pm: A person has died after being struck by a freight train at a pedestrian crossing in Invercargill. The incident occurred near Elles Road, close to Turnbull Thomson Park, with police receiving the alert at 5:20pm.

Emergency services, including police and St John personnel, attended the scene. St John confirmed they dispatched one ambulance, an operations manager, and a rapid response unit.

"A scene examination has been conducted and police and KiwiRail are working to clear the scene," a police spokesperson said.

The incident occurred at the Ness Street crossing, which KiwiRail confirmed is equipped with a pedestrian maze and appropriate signage.

Authorities are continuing efforts to identify the deceased. Elles Road remains closed between Tweed and Forth Street while investigations are ongoing. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
