Police have confirmed that one person has died following a serious crash involving two vehicles and a house on State Highway 1, Edendale, in Southland.
The incident occurred at around 10:20pm when a truck and car collided. After the collision, the truck then crashed into a nearby house. Emergency services arrived at the scene to find one person deceased, while the driver of the truck sustained only minor injuries. Fortunately, no one in the house was hurt.
As a result of the accident, the road was initially closed in both directions at 11:25pm. Southbound traffic reopened at 2:45am, but the northbound lane remains closed between Dacre and Mataura. Diversions are in place via State Highway 98, Rakahourka-Hedgehope Road, and State Highway 96. The road is expected to fully reopen by early afternoon.
Drivers are advised that delays may occur, particularly for heavy vehicles.
The Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Safety Team have been informed, and the scene remains under investigation.
