A ‘Mitey’ car boot sale is taking place in Invercargill on March 25 for a good cause. If you’re cleaning out your home, the sale may be the perfect place to sell unwanted goods while raising money for the Sir John Kirwan Foundation at the same time. Invercargill Rotary clubs are collaborating to raise funds for Mitey with the car boot sale being the first event. A site costs $20, and this money goes directly to the Mitey Mental Health Education.

According to Rotary Club of Invercargill president Lisa-Maree Fleck, conversations about mental health have become more frequent in the community. “We have had a number of people, organizations, and individuals who have connected with our club highlight the increase in mental health issues and the need for more support in our community. As a club, we wanted to do something to contribute to making change happen. Supporting the Sir John Kirwan – Mitey program to embed mental health education in our primary schools is our action today for tomorrow’s generation.”
Sir John Kirwan’s Mitey foundation says there is an alarming number of children who experience mental health issues in New Zealand. One in five will experience mental health issues before they turn 18, the foundation says. The Mitey program will put resources into teaching about mental health in schools for children in Years 1 to 8.
Site holders are free to keep whatever they make on the day of the car boot sale, unless, of course, they want to donate it to the Mitey program. The Rotary clubs are also welcoming people who make arts and crafts or handmade items to come along and join the sale. An invitation has also gone out to mobile food outlets to join the car boot sale on the day.
“I’m delighted that What’s On Invers could be part of this wonderful Rotary event. When we were asked to help promote it, we jumped at the opportunity. It’s always a pleasure to work with such a fun-loving and community-minded group of people. They show that making a positive impact in our community can be both enjoyable and fulfilling. At What’s On Invers, we believe in the power of community events and we’re committed to supporting them in any way we can.” – Mike Sanford, founder of What’s On Invers.
