The search for a man missing from a boat in Southland today has been called off for the night.

Police were made aware around 2:30pm today that a 3m alloy dinghy with three people on board had sunk in the Aparima River estuary at Riverton.

Two people made it to shore uninjured, however the third person is still unaccounted for.

A search involving Coastguard, Police Search and Rescue, LandSAR volunteers, and a helicopter was suspended just after 7pm.

It is expected to resume around first light tomorrow, which will coincide with low tide around 7am.
