Residents of Staunton and Fowler Roads have sent a petition to the Invercargill City Council about the state of their road, but a lack of funding means it’s unlikely to be sealed anytime soon.
Nick McCleary spoke in the public forum of the Infrastructure and Projects Committee meeting on Tuesday on behalf of a residents working group, formed eight years ago to tackle the problem.
Nick said during the summer months in particular, the 50 residents’ houses were constantly covered in dust, and it was getting so bad that it even affected people coming to visit them because their vehicles were getting dirty too.
“There has definitely been a change in the dust consent, we’re actually not sure what we are breathing,” he said.
Group manager of infrastructure Erin Moogan acknowledged this was an issue that had been discussed for some time, and confirmed it had rated highly against a priority index in the top 20 list of roads to be sealed.
But unfortunately, because it failed to get NZTA co-funding, it wasn’t programmed in the Long Term Plan.
Mayor Nobby Clark said as a formal rural delivery contractor who had travelled those roads at least 1500 times, his experience was that they did get pot holed and dusty.
“But if you are thinking about the potential cost of sealing that 3.6km, you won’t get a lot of change out of $2 million.”
Nick said estimates they submitted as a group to council 10 years ago had the reseal at just $500,000 to $700,000.
