A new community event is bringing a touch of rural charm to Riversdale, as the town prepares to host its first maize maze fundraiser this summer.
The Riversdale Maize Maze, set on a working farm owned by McClintock Farming Ltd and McClintock Contracting Ltd, will open for three special dates in February, March and April. The event will raise funds for the Waikaia Trails Trust and Riversdale Home & School.
Visitors will be able to explore a winding maze cut through towering maize plants while enjoying the scenic countryside. The idea came about in early 2025 when Matt McClintock was approached with a request to turn part of the family’s maize crop into a temporary maze. With both organisations needing to raise funds, the McClintock family offered their support, and a plan was soon underway.
Work on the maze started in November with soil preparation, planting and design. Despite the growing season being affected by limited sunshine, organisers say the crop should still be tall enough for an exciting experience by the first opening date in February.
“This is something a bit different for our community,” organisers say. “Without the maize crop and the McClintock family’s support, this fundraiser simply wouldn’t be possible. We’re hoping the wider Southland community will get behind it and challenge themselves.”
“We’ll also have some fun farm-style activities for the whole family, plus a BBQ to keep you going.”
The maze is open to all ages, though children must be supervised. Visitors are reminded to wear suitable shoes for farm conditions, and to respect that it’s a working farm. Rain or shine, the event will go ahead—unless extreme weather intervenes.
Proceeds from the event will go toward developing a new Grade 3 (Blue) mountain bike descent trail in the Waikaia Forest trail network, and towards a new playground for Riversdale School.
The maze will run on Sunday 8 February, Saturday 14 March and Saturday 18 April—with the final date offering a special night maze experience.
