Rugby Southland has launched a new application process inviting charities across the region to apply to become its official Charity Partner. The initiative aims to connect the power and profile of rugby with community organisations making a real difference in Southland.

The successful organisation, or organisations, will work alongside Rugby Southland and the Southland Stags. Through this partnership, charities will have the chance to raise awareness, boost engagement and strengthen their impact across the region by tapping into rugby’s strong supporter base.

Charities interested in applying must complete an application form outlining key details about their organisation. This includes governance structures, volunteer and staffing support, community alignment and both short and long-term goals. Applicants are also asked to explain how a partnership with Rugby Southland and the SBS Bank Southland Stags could help advance their mission.

A Rugby Southland spokesman said the organisation is looking forward to seeing what groups come forward.

“It’s incredibly exciting to put the call out — especially when you don’t quite know what amazing organisations and projects are happening across Southland,” King said.

“We know there is outstanding work being done in our region every single day, and this is an opportunity to shine a light on that through the platform of rugby.”

Rugby Southland’s most recent partnership with Hawthorndale Care Village highlighted what can be achieved through collaboration. During the partnership, the Stags helped raise awareness of the Dementia Care Village initiative and supported fundraising efforts that generated more than $50,000 for the project.

King said strong alignment between both organisations is essential for success.

“A proactive charity with strong volunteer backing, a supportive board and committed staff is key to making the most of this opportunity. When there is alignment and shared enthusiasm, we can achieve some incredible outcomes together. After all, it is a partnership.”

The chosen Charity Partner will receive brand exposure at Stags home matches, digital promotion, community activations and opportunities to connect directly with fans and stakeholders.

Applications are now open through Rugby Southland’s official channels and close at 5.00pm on 10 April. Successful applicants will be notified by 1 May. Apply here.
