Saturday night will be rock n roll night as we celebrate the Platinum anniversary of the Southland Rock n Roll Hall of Fame at the Ascot Park Hotel.
The show was to feature 4 of Southland’s top bands from the 60’s and 70’s but sadly they’ve had to drop to three due to Dave Kennedy becoming ill.
Dave Kennedy was to perform with The Answer.
Kennedy went on to become a national star playing in Christchurch based bands Chapta and Link in the 70’s. Remember Only Time Could let Us Know?
Other bands on Saturday night’s bill are Vision featuring Bryan Gerrard and Tony Ross, Route 66 featuring Taff Hewton and Teen Beat Five featuring Gary McNatty.
These bands plus others cut their musical teeth on a hectic schedule of gigs big and small around Southland in the halcyon days of the 60’s and 70’s.
Vision for example had a residency at the Whitehouse Hotel that stretched over many years.
Several members of these bands have moved away, some to Australia like TB5’s Merv Cook and Russell Lee and John Heads has been in the USA for many years, but are never to far away from a guitar, a keyboard or drums.
Show convener and Southland Musician’s Club President Trevor Daly MNZM says its wonderful that these guys love to get back together and play all those great songs from days gone by.
Trevor Daly, a former long time drummer with Vision says despite being one band down, the others will will put on a great show.
He says we have to be mindful that Saturday’s show will probably be the last time these bands will play together.
Trevor Daly says ticket sales are going well but as is the way in Southland, many leave it to then last minute.
Tickets are $45 each and available from the Ascot Park Hotel and Little Fire Musicworks
