Roading
Motorists across Invercargill and Southland are advised to plan ahead this week, with several road closures, water shutdowns and highway maintenance works taking place across the region.
Invercargill City Council Works
Gala Street – Road Closure
Drivers should be aware that Gala Street will be closed as part of upcoming works.
- Day works: Tuesday 18 March – Thursday 20 March
- Night works: 22 – 25 March
During the night works the road will be closed from 5:30pm each evening, reopening before 6am the following morning.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow any detour signage in place.
Southland District Council Works
Water Shutdowns
Te Anau – 16 March
Water interruptions are expected until 2pm today for properties at:
- 2, 4, 16, 24, 30 Oraka Street
- 2 Panton Place
Manapouri – 18 March
Water will be shut down while repairs are carried out at 46 Westmere Place.
- Time: 9:30am – 2pm
- Area affected: All of Westmere Place
Timeframes are indicative and supply will resume without further notice.
Road Closures
Grove Bush Woodlands Road – Waihōpai Toetoe
Closed to through traffic from SH1 (Edendale Woodlands Highway) to Wyeth Road.
- Time: 7am Monday 16 March – 6:30pm Friday 20 March
- Reason: Road repairs at the intersection
- Detour: Via SH1 and Wyeth Road
Badwit Road – Waihōpai Toetoe
Closed between Rimu Seaward Downs Road and Waituna Road.
- Time: 7am Thursday 19 March – 6pm Monday 13 April
- Reason: Bridge replacement
- Access: Residents can access properties on either side of the bridge closure
- Detours:
- North via Waituna Rd, Kapuka North Rd, Rimu Seaward Downs Rd
- South via Waituna Rd, Morton Mains Gorge Rd, Rimu Seaward Downs Rd
Davidson Road – Waihōpai Toetoe
Closed from Mabel Grove Bush Road to Lorne Dacre Road (SH98).
- Time: 7am Monday 23 March – 5:30pm Friday 17 April
- Reason: Bridge replacement
- Access: Residents allowed up to the work site
- Detour: None available
Old Balfour Road – Ardlussa
Closed between St Patricks Road and Walker Road.
- Time: 7am Monday 23 March – 6pm Friday 27 March
- Reason: Trenching for a new water connection
- Detour: St Patricks Rd → SH94 Lumsden Riversdale Highway → Walker Rd
Waikana Road – Ōreti
Closed from Avondale Road.
- Time: 7am Monday 23 March – 6pm Friday 27 March
- Reason: Culvert replacement
- Detour: None available (no-exit road)
Stewart Island Road Reseals
Contractors Fulton Hogan have begun resealing roads across Stewart Island.
Due to weather, sea conditions and material availability, specific timeframes cannot be confirmed.
Residents can check the daily reseal update board outside Four Square, or the Stewart Island Rakiura Community Board Facebook page.
Works this week include:
- 16 March: Elgin Terrace and Nichol Road
- 17 March (planned): Excelsior Road and Leonard Street
State Highway Works
Several highway renewal and maintenance projects are also underway across Southland.
Major renewal sites
- SH99 Wallacetown: Road renewal between Wallacetown and Underwood-Linds Bridge Road
- Duration: Approximately 4 weeks
- Traffic control: Temporary lights
- Delays: Around 15–20 minutes
- SH90 Waikaka Valley: Construction between Waikaka Road and Cunningham Road
- Duration: Until late March
- Delays: Around 5–10 minutes
Highway Maintenance (traffic lights, stop/go or reduced speeds)
Motorists may encounter delays at the following locations:
- SH1 Woodlands–Invercargill Highway (Wyeth Road) – resurfacing
- SH1 Edendale–Woodlands Highway (near Davidson Road) – resurfacing
- SH1 / SH93 intersection – lane shift for pavement repairs
- SH6 Winton–Lorneville Highway (Wilsons Crossing) – pavement repairs
- SH96 Nightcaps–Ohai Highway – multiple pavement repair sites
- SH6 Lumsden–Dipton Highway (north of Caroline) – pavement repairs
- SH94 Lumsden–Riversdale Highway – pavement repairs between Balfour and Longridge
- SH94 Te Anau–Mossburn Highway – several pavement repair sites
- SH97 Mossburn–Five Rivers Road – resurfacing and pavement repairs
- SH99 Orepuki–Riverton Highway (Longwoods Road) – resurfacing
- SH99 Clifden Bridge – guardrail repairs
Roadmarking Work
Mobile traffic management will be in place for roadmarking on:
- SH6 Invercargill urban area
- SH96 Mataura to Winton
- SH96 Winton to Ohai
- SH98 Mill Road right-turn bay
