The resurfacing of State Highway 1 (Tay Street) starts Sunday night, with an eastbound closure from Kelvin Street to Queens Drive between 6 PM and 6 AM. Westbound traffic is not affected. Pedestrian access remains open for Koji Restaurant and the Civic Theatre, while Woolworths customers should use the Esk Street entrance. Waitomo access is available via Doon Street.
On State Highway 6 (Dee Street), inside lanes in both directions between Yarrow Street and Gala Street will close from 6 PM for the final resurfacing work.
Weekend Traffic Alerts
Drivers should prepare for additional traffic congestion
- On Saturday, 1 March due to the A&P Show on Bainfield Road. Expect heavy traffic loading throughout the day.
On Sunday, 2 March, traffic will also be affected by major events:
- Surf to City (Invercargill): Stop/go at SH6 Dee Street/Victoria Avenue intersection for short intervals.
- Hilux World Record Attempt (Kingston): Stop/stop at SH6 Kingston for brief periods.
In Otatara, drainage and earthworks on Otatara Road will continue until 3 March, with one lane closed. The team will return between 10 and 21 March for road pavement construction, which will require a detour.
State Highway Disruptions
Road users should also be aware of multiple State Highway projects across Southland this week. These include:
- SH1 Bluff Highway (Avon Road to Motu Rimu Road) – pavement repairs
- SH1 Tay Street (Kelvin to Deveron Street) – eastbound closure from 6 PM – 6 AM on 2 March
- SH1 Tay Street (Doon Street to Mary Street) – full closure from 6 PM – 6 AM each night, 3-6 March
- SH6 Winton-Lorneville Highway – pavement repairs at Makarewa Bridge and Branxholme-Makarewa Road
- SH6 & SH96 roadworks across Lumsden, Dipton, Te Anau, Winton, and Riverton – various chipseal and pavement repairs
Additional Works And Roadmarking
- Roadmarking will take place across SH6 urban and rural areas and SH1 Old Edendale Road.
- Third-party works will involve lane drops and stop/go controls on SH1 Clyde Street, SH1 Pioneer Highway, SH6 Kingston, and SH95 Manapouri-Te Anau Highway.
- Upcoming Work: Asphalt resurfacing is planned for SH99 at Lorneville in March/April.
