- Road closures scheduled for Pyramid Waiparu Road and Nightcaps Opio Road for culvert replacement.
Road users in Invercargill and Southland should prepare for multiple roadworks, resurfacing projects, and closures over the coming weeks.
Invercargill Roadworks
Asphalt resurfacing continues tonight between 6pm-6am on SH1 Tay St in Invercargill. Tay St will be closed from Kelvin St to Queen's Drive heading east (away from town) from 6pm - 6am. Westbound will be unaffected.
Pedestrian access remains for Koji Restaurant and the Civic Theatre. Access to Woolworths from Esk St entrance, and to Waitomo station via Doon St entrance.
There will also be a lane closure on SH6 Dee St (inside lanes in both directions) between Yarrow and Gala Streets from 6pm while the team surface the last remaining section of Dee St.

March 3 – March 6Queens Dr intersection and SH1 Tay St, from Queens Dr to Mary St, closed in both directions. HPMV detour in place: use Rockdale Rd/Tweed St, for over-height (4.3m+ ) use Inglewood Rd/Tweed St.
Southland Roadworks
Several highways across Southland are undergoing pavement repairs and resurfacing, including:
- SH1 Bluff Highway (Awarua) – Pavement renewal.
- SH6 Winton-Lorneville Highway – Pavement repairs at Counsell Road, Branxholme-Makarewa Road, and Flora Road.
- SH94 Milford Road (Te Anau) & SH94 Te Anau-Mossburn Highway – Chipseal resurfacing, including sections from Hillside-Manapouri Road to Wilderness Road, The Key, and Gorge Creek.
- SH96 Winton-Hedgehope Highway (Springhills) & SH96 Winton-Wreys Bush Highway – Pavement repairs and resurfacing between Drummond-Oreti and Spar-Bush-Winton Roads.
- SH96 Glencoe Highway & SH99 Riverton-Wallacetown Highway (Bickley Rd) – Pavement renewal and chipseal resurfacing.
- SH99 Tuatapere-Orepuki Highway & SH99 Main Road Tuatapere (near Jenkins Rd) – Surface and pavement repairs.
Third-Party Works And Traffic Management
Several locations will have lane restrictions and Stop/Go controls in place due to various infrastructure works:
- SH1 Clyde Street, Invercargill & SH1 Clyde St/Tweed St Roundabout – Lane drops for watermain and kerb repairs.
- SH95 Manapouri-Te Anau Highway – Stop/Go for trenching at Manapouri and tree maintenance near William Stephen Road.
- SH98 Lorne-Dacre Road – Stop/Go for drilling.
- SH94 Te Anau-Mossburn Highway (Centre Hill) – Stop/Go for tree felling.
Upcoming Road Closures
- Pyramid Waiparu Road – Closed from 24-28 February and again from 3-7 March for culvert replacement. Northbound and southbound detours are in place.
- Nightcaps Opio Road – Closed from 10-14 March (alternative dates 17-21 March) for culvert replacement. Residents will have access up to the culvert.
Resealing Schedule
- 25 February – Otautau-Tuatapere Road, Otautau-Wreys Bush Road.
- 26 February – Gropers Bush-Thornbury Road.
- 28 February - 1 March – Spar Bush-Winton Road.
Te Anau Reseals
- 3 March – Te Anau Terrace will be one-way from Dusky Street to the town centre. Temporary boat ramp closure for sealing, with Stop/Go at Dusky Street.
- 4 March – Lakefront Drive will be one-way from SH95 to the town centre. Mokoroa Street residents must turn right towards the town centre.
