Road users across Southland should prepare for delays and detours as roadworks and maintenance continue across the region. The Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council, and Highways South have advised motorists to plan ahead and follow temporary speed limits to ensure safety for both workers and drivers.

Tweed Street Roundabout, Invercargill
The Tweed Street roundabout will be reduced to one lane from late this week while kerb and channel replacements are completed. Once finished, the road will be resurfaced. The work is expected to be completed by the first week of March.

SH6 Dee Street, Invercargill
Overnight lane closures will be in place between Spey Street and Gala Street from Sunday to Tuesday evenings, between 6pm and 6am, for asphalt resurfacing.

  • Northbound traffic will be detoured via Spey Street, Mersey Street, and Victoria Avenue.
  • Southbound traffic will be redirected through Fox Street, Kelvin Street, and Spey Street.
  • Heavy vehicles will continue using the designated bypass.

SH1 Tay Street, Invercargill
Eastbound lanes between Kelvin Street and Queens Drive will be closed overnight from Monday to Thursday, between 6pm and 6am, for resurfacing.

  • Detours will be available via Kelvin Street, Yarrow Street, and Jed Street or via Nith Street and Tweed Street.

Additional Roadworks And Temporary Traffic Management
Temporary speed limits, stop/go controls, and lane closures will be in effect across several highways for pavement repairs and resurfacing, including:

  • SH1 Bluff Highway at Awarua and Nith Street.
  • SH6 Winton-Lorneville Highway at Counsell Road and Flora Road.
  • SH94 Lumsden-Riversdale Highway, SH96 Winton-Hedgehope Highway, and SH97 Mossburn-Five Rivers Road.
  • SH99 Tuatapere-Orepuki Highway at various locations.

Road marking will also take place overnight in Invercargill, Winton, and Lumsden, while tourist arrows will be installed at Fairlight, Mossburn, and Milford, weather permitting.

  • SH1 Clyde Street asphalt resurfacing will occur overnight with one-directional closures.
  • SH96 Wreys Bush and SH99 Lorneville will undergo pavement renewal.
  • Motu Rimu Road access from Bluff Highway is closed this week, with an alternative route via Blythe Street.
