- Water pipe upgrade along Sydney Street may cause delays and lane closures until early May
- Kelvin Street will be northbound only as Branxholme Pipeline Upgrade begins at the end of March
- Highway works, roadmarking, and tree maintenance continue across Southland with detours in place
Invercargill drivers are being asked to plan ahead, with roadworks happening across multiple key areas in the city and surrounding Southland region.
On Sydney Street, the Invercargill City Council has started upgrading the water pipes between St Andrew Street and King Street. This work began at the intersection with St Andrew Street and will continue through to early April. From early May, contractors will move to the west side of the street and work back up from the same starting point. Lane closures and detours will be in place throughout the project. While residents and businesses will still be able to access the street, delays are expected.
Also starting soon is the next stage of the Branxholme Pipeline Upgrade. From Monday, 31 March, work will begin on Kelvin Street between Gala and Fox streets. This part of the project is expected to last around a month. The eastern lane of Kelvin Street—closest to Queens Park—will be closed, and parking on that side will be removed. The street will be northbound only, with southbound traffic detoured at Fox Street. Parking may also be limited on the western side of the road.
Highways South has listed a range of state highway maintenance projects happening this week that could also cause delays:
- SH1 Bluff Highway from Greenpoint to McGorlick Street is undergoing pavement repairs
- SH1 Clyde Street (between Troopers and Tweed Street roundabouts) is closed for night-time asphalt work
- SH6 near Lochiel Bridge Road and SH99 near Webb Road are being resurfaced
- SH96 at Transmission Line Road is being repaired
Other works include mobile roadmarking operations on SH6, SH93, SH99, and SH97, as well as tree work across several sites on SH1, SH6, and SH96. In addition, maintenance of powerlines will cause delays on SH99 near Orepuki.
Looking ahead to April, night works and asphalt resurfacing are planned at the SH1/SH6 Troopers roundabout, SH1 at Kekeno Place, and SH99 at Lorneville.
Drivers are advised to take extra care and follow any temporary traffic controls or detours in place during this time.
