More than 60 trees in Invercargill's Town Belt are coming down starting next week — some of them planted 150 years ago.
The felling is a direct consequence of October's extreme winds, when a 25-metre pine blew onto Elles Road traffic. Nobody was hurt, but councillors made the call last year not to rely on that again.
Work begins Monday July 27 with 12 large macrocarpa trees at Otakaro Park on the corner of Queens Drive and Don Street. The Elles Road block — 27 macrocarpas — follows in the first two weeks of August.
Meanwhile, road works across several parts of the city are creating detours drivers will want to know about before they head out.
On Don Street between Kelvin and Deveron streets, watermain renewal is ongoing. The eastbound lane is closed within the work zone, with westbound traffic maintained from Deveron Street. A partial closure of the Don Street/Deveron Street intersection is in place, with turning restrictions and signed detours. On-street parking is unavailable in the active work area.
Yes PetSmart.NZ on the corner of Deveron and Spey streets remains open, but the carpark entrance off Deveron street is temporarily blocked. Drivers can still reach the carpark from the Yarrow Street end via what is normally the exit. See below.
Wastewater upgrades are underway along Coronation Street, York Street and Tramway Road, with work expected to run until December. The Moulson Street/Brown Street and Moulson Street/Dyson Street intersections are closed. Residents on Coronation Street need to enter and exit via Tramway Road, though access from the Moulson Street/Coronation Street intersection remains open.
On Tweed Street, pipe renewal between Raymond and Pomona streets has reduced two lanes to one.
The council has not released a timeline for how long the Don Street or Tweed Street works will continue.
