Three hundred and twenty refurbished laptops are heading to Southland schools and youth organisations, courtesy of a deal between Great South, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and a handful of local groups.

MBIE is donating retired devices from its own fleet. The laptops will be split across the Southland Youth Futures Programme, youth development organisation Your Corps and Southland Boys High School. All have been tested and refurbished before distribution. The first batch arrives within the next couple of weeks, with more to follow later in the year for some programmes.

Great South chief executive Chami Abeysinghe said the initiative would help strengthen digital inclusion across the region. "Access to technology is increasingly essential for learning, skill development and preparing young people for the workforce," she said. "This initiative will help ensure more Southland students and young people have access to the tools they need to participate fully in education and build confidence using digital technology."

The logic is hard to argue with. A government agency refreshes its IT fleet, the old hardware gets wiped and refurbished instead of landfilled, and kids who might otherwise be doing homework on a shared family phone get their own device. Everyone wins.

Abeysinghe said the collaboration showed what was possible when government and local organisations worked together. "Partnerships like this allow us to make practical use of resources that still have plenty of life left in them while creating real opportunities for young people in our communities," she said.

For the receiving organisations, the timing matters. Digital access at home and at school is no longer a nice-to-have — it is the baseline requirement for participating in modern education. Southland's geographic spread means the gap between connected and disconnected young people is wider here than in most urban centres. Three hundred and twenty laptops will not close that gap entirely, but it is a concrete step rather than a strategy document.
