Hi De Hi Campers  (there could be a theme for a TV show there??!!) How has winter been treating you?

Yes its cold grey and a tad dreary but that’s winter. Just thinking over the weekend that we’ve got off reasonably lightly so far this winter. So far….. We haven’t had the deep dark weather systems roll over us that see snow to low levels, main roads closed and flight timetables disrupted…..yet.

Have you also noticed that the days are getting a bit longer at each end?

First things first, getting excited about the Olympics in Rio? No? Neither are we and they start in just over two weeks.

What a ghastly business in France last week. Hope that you have kept in touch with family or friends that live in that fine country or holidaying over there.

Issues on our doorstep. I’m getting moderately excited about the local body elections. The list of candidates is growing steadily and to my mind all bring some special attributes to the coming election.

voting

Along with Lesley Soper joining the list of new candidates there are two other women Alex Crackett and Toni Biddle (as far as I know) putting themselves forward to possibly steer our city forward for the next three years at least. More on voting here!

If you are planning to stand for any of our local councils or know someone who is mulling it over can you please let us know so we can put it on whatsoninvers.nz Thanks.

Good to see that Paul Clark has got his pet elephant back from the repair shop to adorn Zookeepers cafe. Read more here!

subway drive

What else. Congratulations to Richard and Paula Jackson on opening their new Subway outlet on Victoria Ave. They are tapping into the ever expanding commercial area of the city in that neck of the woods. It also means several people have jobs and its New Zealand’s first drive thu Subway. Mike and I had a taste test last week on your behalf and were very impressed !

Speaking of cafe’s and such like, jungle drums are telling us that another cafe operator is looking at setting up shop in the Industrial Park. If you haven’t been round there lately, have a look. There’s some really exciting developments going on around there.

Speaking of taste tests , Mike and I sampled the new cafe in the South City Mall last week and we were very impressed. That part of town is growing fast and the extensive renovations of the New World supermarket will make it a hive of activity.

By the way, if you know of developments , businesses that are in the pipeline to get going could you please let us know so we get it on whatsoninvers.nz

Also if you missed the Mike King visit where he hosted meeting about depression and suicide, click the link below to read about his visit and what great work he is doing in helping us talk about this subject.

mary

To wrap up, hearty congratulations to everyone involved in Invercargill Musical Theatre’s current production of Mary Poppins. Believe me it’s no small feat to get these sorts of productions onto the stage. For every one person we see on stage there is probably about three people, maybe more behind the scenes helping to deliver some magic. Wonderful entertainment! Read my review here

Go The Highlanders in the Super Rugby playoffs with their game in Australia this weekend. But can anyone understand how that whole system works ?

And The Stags with no Whoppa? A brave step in a new direction? Only time will tell when the NPC kicks off in a matter of weeks.

Have a great week team, keep warm, enjoy the rest of the school holidays and take it easy on our roads.
