The Southland Boys’ High School Board has announced the appointment of Ray Laurenson as the new Rector of Southland Boys’ High School. Laurenson’s selection followed a thorough recruitment process managed by EDSOL NZ, attracting a significant number of high-calibre candidates.

Co-Presiding member Emma Smaill expressed her delight with the appointment, stating that Laurenson will guide the school through an exciting phase of development. “The decision certainly wasn’t an easy one for the Board due to the excellent interviews given by shortlisted candidates.”

Smaill highlighted Laurenson’s deep connection to the school’s history and culture, noting that his passion and ability to connect with the entire school community made him stand out during the selection process.

Chami Abeysinghe, also a Co-Presiding member, added, “Ray brings with him a wealth of experience in teaching and learning. His long-term vision for the school is progressive and detailed and aligns with the school’s strategic direction.” She emphasised that the Board was unanimous in their decision, recognising Laurenson’s strong commitment to advancing the school’s mission.

Laurenson, who has over 20 years of teaching and management experience, has been the Acting Rector since the departure of former Rector Simon Coe. His previous roles include Deputy Principal and Acting Principal at Aparima College.

Laurenson expressed his excitement and gratitude, saying, “Southland Boys’ High School means a lot to me, so to be given the chance to lead it is a real honour. I was thrilled when the call came through offering me the job.”

Reflecting on his long association with the school, he said, “Southland Boys’ High School has been an integral part of my life for such a long time. I met my wife here and I still have vivid memories of my children learning to walk in the upstairs classrooms. Now I have been placed at the helm and given the responsibility of leading the team as we continue to teach, guide, coach and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.” He concluded with, “I am truly humbled.”

Laurenson will officially began his role as Rector on Tuesday, 20th August 2024.
