Despite steady rain across Southland, thousands of people gathered on Sunday for the annual Wensley’s Cycles Surf to City, once again turning the popular community event into a celebration of movement and connection.
Participants of all ages and abilities made their way along the course from Oreti Beach and other starting points, finishing at Queens Park in Invercargill. Families walked together, children rode bikes, runners pushed for personal bests, and groups from schools, workplaces and sports clubs travelled the route side by side.

Although the wet weather created challenging conditions, it did little to dampen the atmosphere. Smiles were still easy to find along the route as participants encouraged one another and enjoyed the chance to be active together.
An Active Southland spokesman said the event continues to highlight the positive role activity plays in strengthening communities.
“Wensley’s Cycles Surf to City is a reminder that being active looks different for everyone and that’s something we’re proud to support,” he said.

“Whether people walked, ran, biked, pushed a pram or teamed up with friends, today was about celebrating movement in a way that feels good for each person.”
While the final number of participants may be slightly lower because of the weather, the turnout still impressed organisers who have seen the event grow into one of the region’s most recognised participation activities.
“Every year we are blown away by the enthusiasm Southlanders bring to this event,” the spokesman said.
“Seeing people set goals, support each other, and enjoy being active together is exactly why Surf to City is so special.”
One of the most notable efforts came from a team of 12 Invercargill firefighters and one St John first responder. The group completed the full distance while carrying a weighted stretcher as part of the Southland Community Challenge.
Their effort aimed to raise funds for three local organisations. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be shared between Hospice Southland, Kiwi Harvest and the Grace St Project.

For Active Southland, the event reflects a wider commitment to ensuring everyone feels welcome to take part in physical activity, regardless of ability or experience.
“We want everyone to feel they belong in spaces where activity happens. Events like today show that our community is strongest when everyone has a chance to take part.”
The organisation also thanked Wensley’s Cycles, event partners, volunteers and the wider Southland community for helping deliver another successful Surf to City.
