Queenstown Road Project Budget More Than Doubles to $250 Million

The New Zealand government has increased its budget for the Queenstown BP roundabout and connecting roads upgrade to $250 million, a significant rise from the previously allocated $115 million.
The upgrade includes the installation of 18 new traffic lights and a roundabout at State Highway 6 and Howards Drive, aimed at improving traffic flow and supporting tourism and residential development.

In a bold move to tackle traffic congestion and support growth, New Zealand’s Transport Minister, Simeon Brown, has unveiled a hefty $250 million budget for enhancements to Queenstown’s crucial BP roundabout and its adjoining roads.

This financial commitment showcases a substantial increase, more than doubling the initial $115 million set aside by the previous administration. The revelation came during a pivotal sod-turning event in Queenstown, signaling the onset of a significant four-year endeavor aimed at transforming the region’s road infrastructure.

Minister Brown underscored the project’s vital role in paving the way for new housing opportunities and propelling the tourism sector forward. He firmly stated the expectation for the undertaking to progress according to its stipulated timeline and financial plan.

This expansive upgrade will see the introduction of 18 new traffic lights across State Highways 6 and 6A and the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of State Highway 6 and Howards Drive, all designed to streamline traffic flow and lessen the dependence on private vehicles.

As the project kicks off, initial efforts will concentrate on less intrusive activities such as the enhancement of underground services adjacent to the Frankton golf course, strategically planned to mitigate any significant traffic disruptions.

This meticulous approach aims to ensure continuous movement across Queenstown’s busiest junctions, notably through the innovative repositioning of the BP roundabout, thereby maintaining an efficient flow of traffic during the construction phase.
