Invercargill’s Queens Park won the Kiwi’s Choice in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards this week – the only place to feature in the entire South Island.

The longest running sustainability awards have been running since 1972 and aim to inspire, recognise and acknowledge individuals, schools, community groups – as well as towns and city working hard to Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

Whakatane took out the overall Most Beautiful Towns and Cities Supreme Winner, while Wellington won Best Large City, and Taupo Best Large Town.

Organisers said 3300 people voted for Queens Park, with the Kiwi’s Choice Award celebrating New Zealand’s favourite public spot – including beaches, parks, waterfalls, lakes and walking tracks.

Invercargill City Council said a huge thank you to everyone in Invercargill (and New Zealand) who voted for the iconic park.

“This award not only represents Queens Park or the wonderful staff that nurture and help her grow.  It represents you, the community of Invercargill, who all the park to be part of your everyday lives.

“So here’s to the people admiring the rose garden, to the people walking the lanes during their lunch break, to the babies laughing as they’re pushed on the swings, and here’s to the children who squeal with delight at the animals in the reserve.”
