The price of fresh fruit and vegetables has many of us reaching for the spade and gardening gloves and looking to see how successful we can be growing our own produce.
But did you know you can make your own beautiful, nutrient-rich soil? All it takes is a bit of know-how and some compost.
This week is International Compost Week, and the Murihiku Kai Collective, supported by Healthy Families Invercargill, is running a free public compost workshop to help people dig into the dos and don’ts of creating compost.
Special guests will be compost experts The CarbonCycle Company, and there will also be some local experts on hand to provide their own tips and tricks.
Healthy Families Invercargill Lead Systems Innovator Stella O’Connor, who is a keen gardener and avid composter, said the public talk would be an easy way for people to learn how to get started with their own composting, and would provide some inspiration from families, businesses, and organisations who had already been experimenting with their own composting activities.
“This is a great way to not only learn from the experts, but also get started on helping reduce the amount of household or workplace food and organic waste going to landfill, and instead transforming it into nutrient rich soil, which can, in turn, be used to help backyard gardens flourish.
“It’s an absolute win all round – the amount of waste going to landfill reduces, and households have access to their own nutritious, low-cost fresh produce.”
The public talk will be held on Monday May 15, at the South Lounge of the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club, starting at 5.30pm. Light refreshments would be offered before the talk.
While attendance is free, for catering purposes people wanting to attend are asked to email: [email protected]
