Planned roadworks across Southland this week may cause delays for motorists, with both night works and daytime operations scheduled across multiple locations, including the Powernet work.
Invercargill drivers can expect intersection maintenance from Sunday to Thursday evenings between 6pm and 4am. While most of the work will be carried out using mobile operations, turning restrictions may apply at certain sites.
Work will begin Monday at the Troopers Memorial Roundabout and the Gala Street and Dee Street intersection. On Tuesday, crews will return to the Gala and Dee Street intersection where turning and access restrictions will be in place. Wednesday’s focus will shift to the Queens Drive and Tay Street intersection, and the week will end with crews revisiting both the Gala/Dee Street intersection and the Troopers Memorial Roundabout on Thursday.
Elsewhere, Highways South crews will carry out work across several highways using temporary speed limits and traffic lights. These areas include:
- SH1 Bluff Highway at Greenhills, with drainage work underway
- SH1 Bluff Highway between Clifton and Motu Rimu Road, where flanking and drainage work is being done ahead of road renewal
- SH93 Old Coach Road between Slopedown School Road and Hurst Road, also for flanking and drainage work
- SH94 Te Anau–Mossburn Highway at The Key, for similar pre-renewal work
- SH96 Winton–Wreys Bush Highway at Heddon Bush, with drainage improvements
- SH96 Winton–Hedgehope Highway between Hedgehope and Springhills, with further drainage work

Next week our heli stringing moves to Mill Road South and Mason Road, with road closures in place.
Monday 8 September: Mill Road South will be closed between East Road and Oteramika Road, with traffic management in place on Oteramika Road as well. Residents should enter via East Road. Due to some equipment issues, we've had to postpone our heli stringing work on Mill Road South today. All going well, it should go ahead tomorrow.
Tuesday 9 September: Mill Road South will be closed between East Road and Mason Road, with traffic management in place on both Oteramika and Mason Roads. Residents of the area between East Road and Oteramika Road should enter from the East Road end.
Wednesday 10 September: Mill Road South will be closed between Oteramika and Mason Roads. Residents will need to exit via Oteramika Road. There will be stop/go traffic management in place on Mason Road.
Residents in the areas where roads are closed will be escorted in by traffic management when it is safe to do so – expect some delays. Please pay attention to all traffic management directions, we appreciate your patience.
