PowerNet has announced that its Chief Executive Jason Franklin will resign on 2 April 2025, after more than a decade leading the Invercargill-based energy distribution company. He will take on the Chief Executive role at Powerco later that month, overseeing New Zealand’s second-largest electricity and gas distributor, which serves over 1.1 million customers across the North Island.
Under his leadership, PowerNet achieved several milestones, including improved safety performance, significant business integrations, and expanded regional networks. Key projects during his tenure include the acquisition of OtagoNet and the development of Southern Generation. Additionally, he worked closely with shareholders to support major transactions, such as the sale of PowerNet to The Power Company Limited.
Recently, PowerNet has drawn attention for plans to install large power poles along Findlay Road—a proposal that has sparked public debate. Many residents believe the lines should have been placed underground, prompting local councillors to review district planning rules. Before joining PowerNet, the departing CEO built a 14-year career with the Rio Tinto Group, working in various international roles. He began his career with the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand and has served on numerous boards, including SmartCo Limited, SBS Bank, and Electricity Networks Aotearoa.
Powerco’s Board Chair praised his appointment, noting his proven track record in delivering results in complex sectors. The incoming Chief Executive expressed enthusiasm about joining Powerco during a time when significant investment in energy infrastructure is critical to meeting future demand.
The transition will take place on 28 April 2025. Powerco’s Chief Financial Officer will continue as Acting CEO until then, while PowerNet’s Board has launched the process to find a new Chief Executive.
