PowerNet customers in Southland and Otago have been experiencing power interruptions and network disturbances due to the high wind conditions in the region. PowerNet managed networks have been particularly affected, with disruptions reported from Central Southland through to North Otago.
PowerNet chief executive Jason Franklin confirmed that the company has been extremely busy with power outages over The Power Company and OtagoNet networks. However, he assured customers that PowerNet staff are working as safely and quickly as possible to restore the electricity supply to those affected.
At the peak of the power outages, 6,075 customers were without power. As of noon today, this number had reduced to 505 customers, with 5,570 being progressively restored throughout the morning.
According to Mr. Franklin, the high wind conditions are expected to continue throughout the day, and customers are advised to take necessary precautions and report any power outages or network disturbances to PowerNet.
Unfortunately, due to the volume of faults, PowerNet may be unable to complete the work today. Some customers in the Tokonui and Owaka areas could still be without power overnight. However, PowerNet’s teams will return at daylight tomorrow to complete the restoration of power to those customers still affected.
PowerNet would like to remind the public to never approach broken lines on the ground. If a member of the public sees damage to the network or PowerNet’s electrical equipment, they should keep themselves and others well away.
