Police were called to a family harm matter in Invercargill shortly after 10am. After threatening people at an address a man has then fled in a vehicle.

While responding to the incident Police located the vehicle near Grasmere and attempted to stop it by laying road spikes. The fleeing driver has avoided the road spokes and continued driving towards Invercargill. Police patrols continued to pursue the fleeing driver towards the Windsor area.

The fleeing driver has then collided with a van and Police car and as a result of this crash, the Police vehicle has hit a house causing significant damage. No-one was seriously injured in the incident. Inspector Mike Bowman, Acting Area Commander Southland.

The fleeing driver, a male, was arrested at the scene.

Police would like to hear form any witnesses to the crash or anyone who saw the fleeing driver travelling in a red Mitsubishi ute between Grasmere and Windsor between 10am and 10.45am.

A Herbert street resident Ray said “I was inside and heard an Almighty bang’ and by the time I got outside the Police cars were everywhere and Police were struggling with the guy on the ground. He was known to Police as they used his name as he was being arrested .

Police inquiries are continuing into the Family Harm incident and the crash.
