Police officers and Special Olympics athletes will join together on Sunday, 30 November 2025, for the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) in Invercargill. The event, which is part of a global movement, celebrates inclusion and raises awareness for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Torch Run will start at 12 noon at ILT Stadium. Police and athletes will begin with a lap around the running track before gathering outside for a short ceremony and a photo opportunity. The run is one of several events happening across the country in the lead-up to the 2025 Special Olympics National Summer Games, set to take place in Christchurch from 11 to 13 December.

Event organiser Jill Hodges said the event is a simple but meaningful expression of unity and community pride.
“This is about celebrating inclusion, raising awareness, and giving our athletes the recognition they deserve before heading to the National Games,” Hodges said. “We’re thrilled to have the support of our local police, who play such an important role in the LETR around the world.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Ashleigh Smail from Invercargill Police also highlighted the significance of the occasion.
“The LETR is a fantastic opportunity for police to connect with our community and support these inspiring athletes as they prepare to represent Southland on the national stage,” Smail said.

Special Olympics patron Hon. Penny Simmonds has been invited to attend the event and deliver a short address before the run begins.

The public is warmly encouraged to attend, cheer on the athletes, and show support for the values of inclusion, respect, and community that the LETR represents.
