Emergency Management Southland is responsible for Civil Defence in Southland and is undertaking a series of public meetings to encourage Civil Defence preparedness in the region.
Meetings are being held throughout Southland, including four initial meetings in different locations around Invercargill, the first of which is on Monday April 30th, 7pm in the Aurora College Auditorium.
While Southlanders are known for their ability to come together and support each other when needed, we all need to understand what this means for the region in an emergency. Southland already has strong community links and a desire to ‘get the job done’ but in this time of changing demographics, increasing tourism and a move away from traditional volunteering, we need to re-engage with our communities. Local people are the ones who understand their assets, vulnerabilities and resources, and communities need to feel empowered to look after themselves when it matters.

These meetings are interactive and include information on the possible risks and hazards in the region, and the impacts of these on people. We also share tips to help individuals and communities prepare for the challenges they may face and offer suggestions for how communities can share knowledge and resources to support each other.
Emergency Management Southland is working to understand the make-up of Southland’s communities and the great work already being done around the region. This involves meeting with as many interested groups as possible including not for profit organisations, Iwi, service groups, community leaders, in fact anyone who has a stake in their community. So come along on Monday night, find out more and have your say on how we can all be more prepared and resilient.
