Phil Kingsley Jones will be the guest speaker at this year’s ILT Southland Sports Awards, being held at the Ascot Park Hotel on June 17.

Perhaps best known in New Zealand as the manager of the late Jonah Lomu, Kingsley Jones is also widely renowned as an entertainer, sportsman, coach, motivator and businessman and has a reputation as a stand-up comedian.

Sport Southland Chief Executive Brendon McDermott expected Kingsley Jones would be a popular addition to the awards function.

“The awards night is about celebration and entertainment and someone like Phil, who has experience across such a wide spectrum and is so well-known as a great speaker, will definitely add to that,” he said.

“We are looking forward to hearing from him and have no doubt he will add plenty to what is always a fantastic night.”

The Welshman’s visit to Invercargill also coincides nicely with the All Blacks test series against Wales.

Tickets to the ILT Southland Sports Awards had been in high demand, McDermott said, with the premier formal event on the south’s sporting calendar once again very well supported.

“We will be celebrating some simply outstanding performances on the night and it’s great that the Southland public so eagerly support that,” he said.

A very limited number of tickets were still available, however McDermott expected the evening to once again be a sell-out.

The ILT Southland Sports Awards celebrate sporting performances and achievements between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016.

The categories are ILT Senior Sportsperson, Vodafone Junior Sportsperson, Southland Kia Team of the Year, Ricoh Southland Coach of the Year, BDO Administrator of the Year,

Creation Signs Official of the Year and NZME Masters Achievement of the Year. Sport Southland Services to Sport Award/s will also be presented on the night, along with the winner of The Southland Times People’s Choice Sporting Moment of the Year.
