They say Death visits thrice. For me the last 10 days or so has seen that character visit 4 times, to people I have known or known of. Sadly one of those in the “known of” category is ever jovial sports identity and drummer, Peter White.

Peter was struck down with Motor Neuron disease earlier this year and passed away peacefully at home last weekend.

I did not know Pete personally but do know his ever loving wife Melissa.

For those not familiar Peter has been a long time (over 20 years) Tennis coach here in Invers introducing the game of racquets and balls to countless youngsters, many of whom would’ve taken the skills they learnt from Peter on with them wherever life has taken them.

Peter was also key in Invercargill hosting two Davis Cup challenges back in the early 2000’s, certainly a big deal at the time.

His sporting talent and contribution to the game he loved saw him recognized with a Sport Southland Services To Sport Award. Totally justified.

Peter was also more than a dab hand bashing out the beat behind a drum kit especially for the band Justin Funk Monkey.

Peter, you leave Melissa and Emma behind as you embark on your new journey, go well.
