Hospice Southland has announced the appointment of Pete Thompson as its new Chief Executive, with his leadership beginning in January 2026.
Thompson steps into the role with over two decades of leadership experience, having held senior positions in both local government and the not-for-profit sector. His past roles include Executive Manager at Invercargill City Council and Chief Executive of YMCA Southland. He has also served in several governance positions, such as Chair of the Southland Community Broadcasters Charitable Trust and Director of Stadium Southland.
Well known in the region for his community involvement and collaborative leadership style, Thompson said he feels privileged to lead an organisation that is so deeply connected to the people it serves.
“It is an honour to join Hospice Southland and to be part of something that represents the very best of who we are - caring, resilient, and connected. Hospice Southland is more than a service; it’s a reflection of our people, our aroha, and our collective strength as a community.”
Thompson said his first priority will be to reconnect and engage with the Hospice team and its wider network.
“As I begin this role, I’m looking forward to listening, learning, and reconnecting with people across our communities as we shape the next chapter together. My focus is on supporting our team and our volunteers, strengthening relationships with our partners and supporters, and ensuring that everyone who needs hospice care feels seen, supported, and valued.”
Looking ahead, he said he sees Hospice Southland becoming more than a care facility.
“As we look to the future, I’m excited to build on those strong foundations - embracing new ideas and evolving hospice from being simply a place of care to a wider community space of learning, connection, and support.”
Board Chair Helen McCurdy welcomed the appointment, saying it marked a strong and positive step forward.
“Peter is an exceptional leader who combines strategic vision with genuine compassion. His people-centred approach and deep respect for community are exactly what Hospice Southland needs as we continue to evolve and strengthen our role across Southland and the Whakatipu Basin.”
Hospice Southland Ambassador Suzanne Prentice also offered her support.
“Peter has a deep understanding of the community and a genuine commitment to people. Hospice Southland holds a special place in so many hearts, and under his leadership I believe it will continue to grow, adapt, and make a difference in even more lives.”
Hospice Southland has been delivering free specialist palliative care across Southland and the Whakatipu Basin for over 35 years. Services are provided in people’s homes, aged care facilities, and its inpatient unit. As the organisation looks to the future, its mission remains focused on care, innovation, and strengthening its ties to the community.
