Abi James, a dedicated volunteer, has recently received a Community Service Award for her significant contributions to the Fiordland community. The award was presented by Southland District Mayor Rob Scott at Ivon Wilson Park, during an event hosted by the Fiordland Outdoor Playgroup on Monday, May 6.
Despite her relatively short time in the area, James has made a lasting impact by organizing various community events that have enhanced the social and environmental fabric of Te Anau and its surroundings. Her efforts have focused on engaging not only children and youth but also the entire community in activities that foster connection and environmental awareness.
Among her many initiatives, James established the Fiordland Outdoor Playgroup, which encourages free and unstructured play for families and young children. She also played a pivotal role in expanding the Fiordland Community Fun Day into a staple event for Te Anau residents.
In addition, James has been instrumental in creating culturally significant events such as the Pukapuka Party and the Kite and Kēmu event in 2023, which celebrated Matariki by integrating kite making and traditional Māori games. Her involvement in Te Anau’s Story Walk open day further exemplifies her commitment to the community, where she volunteered her time and resources to enhance the experience for participants.
Through these events, James has also ensured that local environmental efforts benefit. Donations collected from participants of the Fiordland Outdoor Playgroup are contributed towards local environmental projects, demonstrating her commitment to sustainability.
Mayor Rob Scott praised her efforts, stating, “Fiordland’s a better place for the countless hours of time and energy that Abi has put into this place.” James’ work exemplifies a profound dedication to both the people and the natural environment of Fiordland, making her a deserving recipient of this community service award.
