It is with regret that Paddy O’Brien has decided not to put his name forward for the upcoming the Invercargill City Council (ICC) by-election.

Due to multiple professional commitments, O’Brien feels that he cannot give the campaign and role the full time and attention it deserves.

“I have had discussions with several key people around the time and commitment I would need to give to the role and have decided I could not do it justice as well as maintaining my full time role as Sevens Referee Manager with World Rugby and my commitments to the ILT Board and the Hawthorndale Care Village project,” he said.

“I love being part of the board at ILT and have decided to remain fully focused on that role, and want to see the Hawthorndale Care Village project through to its completion.”

Being a city councillor is a demanding role that requires dependable commitment and focus, so it needs sufficient time dedicated to it, he said. Given O’Brien’s existing appointments, he felt he would not have enough time to offer to ICC.

“I would encourage other leaders in our community to step forward and take the opportunity to represent our community with integrity and commitment.”
