A 50 year-old woman remains in a serious but stable condition in Dunedin Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound during an incident at a residential property on Otatara Road last night.

Police were called just after 6:30pm after receiving reports that someone had been shot.

The woman was transferred to hospital with critical injuries.

Early this morning Police entered the same address on Otatara Road of the 29 year-old man who was believed to be involved in the shooting incident, where they found his body.

He is suspected to have suffered a self-inflicted injury and his death has now been referred to the Coroner.

Police have today completed the formal identification process for the deceased and can confirm he was Kevin Johnston of Invercargill.

Police can confirm the woman was the only other person injured in this incident.

“I would like to again thank the Otatara community for their cooperation and patience while police attended the incident last night,” says Southland Area Commander, Inspector Joel Lamb.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” says Mr Lamb.

As the matter has now been referred to the Coroner Police is unable to comment further.

Police investigating a shooting in Invercargill have located the body of a 29-year-old man at a residential address on Otatara Road, Otatara.

A search for a man believed to be involved in a shooting incident commenced when a 50-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound on Tuesday evening.

After midnight on Wednesday 21 September 2016 Police entered a house and found the man deceased.

He is suspected to have suffered a self-inflicted injury.

Police can confirm the 29-year-old man was related to the 50-year-old woman.

At this stage we are not looking for anyone else as part of our enquiries and can reassure the people there is no risk posed to the public.

“I would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while Police responded to this event,” says Southland Area Commander, Inspector Joel Lamb.

“A number of cordons were put in place to ensure the public were kept safe.

“I appreciate the cooperation from local residents,” says Mr Lamb.

An address on Otatara Road where the body was found will be guarded overnight.

Police will now carry out investigations into both the shooting and the death of the man.
Part of the process will be to formally identify the man and inform next of kin.

The 50-year-old woman is in Southland Hospital in a critical condition.
