A fatal crash occurred early this morning on Main Street in Mataura, leaving one person dead and another injured. The crash, which involved two vehicles, happened near the intersection with Cardigan Bay Road at around 3:30 am.
Emergency services were quick to respond to the scene and transport the injured person to a nearby hospital via helicopter. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, one person did not survive the crash.
As a result of the incident, traffic management was put in place, and a detour route was established for northbound and southbound road users. The detour route directs drivers to turn left onto Glendhu Road, right onto Townsley Road, left onto McBride Road, right onto Charlton Siding Road, and back onto State Highway 1.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, and authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads and follow the detour route. The identity of the deceased person has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
