The pachyderm, created by noted corrugated iron artist Jeff Thomson, has stood above the cafe for 23 years. Last month he was carefully removed so Mr Clark could drive him on a 3300km round trip to his creator’s studio at Helensville, near Auckland, for ‘‘nip and tuck surgery’’ before returning him home again.

Mr Clark said after years outside in all weathers the elephant was very rusty and had to be totally refurbished. ‘‘He almost lost his trunk just out of Auckland.’’ Now he would last much longer, he said. ‘‘He’s good for another 23 years. He might see me out.’’
