A key resource will be under the spotlight next week as 300 delegates descend on the city for the 2016 New Zealand Freshwater Science Society Conference starting on Monday.

The theme for this year’s conference is “fresh water on the edge” reflecting the push towards the edge of scientific knowledge, including the scientific innovation to maintain and restore special fresh water resources.

New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society President Dr Marc Schallenberg says the issues surrounding fresh water and its preservation have become more and more relevant as water quality becomes less assured through human activity.

“Public feeling around the issue has been heightened over the last decade as the standard of waterways become questionable around many parts of the country.”

“A key topic for discussion at the conference will be around finding what methods of cleaning water ways are most effective and how best to employ them. The Government has committed to spending hundreds of millions of dollars cleaning up water ways, it’s important we do it right.”

Group Manager Business and Strategic Projects Steve Canny says that fresh clean water is one of our most precious commodities and the more knowledge we hold of the quantity and quality of the resource the better.

“Last summer the regions local authorities committed significant resources to conduct an aerial survey of the region’s aquifers, the data collected will be invaluable to provide security of Southland’s water allocation into the future.”

“On Monday evening there is a public forum to discuss key freshwater topics. I encourage Southlanders to attend the forum and put their questions to the best freshwater minds in the country.”
