- Residents of Wallacetown express concerns over the cycle track’s exit near the bridge.
- NZ Transport Agency clarifies the project is not a dedicated cycleway but shoulder widenings.
- Signage will be installed soon to guide movements and ensure safety.
Last week whatsoninvers.nz received a number of emails from concerned Wallacetown residents about the cycle track’s exit and entry points close to the bridge. In response, John O’Neill, Project Manager for NZ Transport Agency, addressed these worries. Related: Southland’s Economy Strengthened by Increased Road Funding
O’Neill clarified that the project is not a dedicated cycleway but involves widening shoulders on SH99 between Steel Road and Wallacetown. This work aims to provide extra width and safety for cyclists. The project is still underway.
He explained that the area in question is part of the Road Reserve and serves as an exit from the highway for those heading west into Wallacetown. It is not designed to be bi-directional, as there is a widened shoulder on the opposite side for eastbound cyclists.
Due to the steepness of the shoulder, the path was routed through the Reserve to make it easier for westbound cyclists. Signage will soon be installed to guide movements and ensure safety.
