The biggest commercial subdivision in Invercargill’s history is moving ahead in leaps and bounds, under the guidance of Russell Cunningham Properties.

While the Cunningham Group holds land for future developments, only one of the 60 sections in the business property hub available for purchase remains unsold, and their latest development is a new purpose built facility for New Zealand Post – located on Bill Richardson Drive.

Company director Alex Cunningham said earthworks was underway for the new 3000 sqm NZ Post hub – that will combine all of its mail sorting and courier depot under one roof.

The fit-for-purpose facility was due to be completed by the end of July 2024.

In the mid-2000s, Russell Cunningham had a vision to develop a new area of the city into a thriving economic hub, where businesses could service their existing client base.

Purchasing the old Invercargill A & P Society showgrounds, many businesses have since re-located to the area such as Farmlands, Bunnings, Opus, Resene, Stonewood, Daikin and Tyre Max.

Among other developments, in 2016 the company developed the Industry cafe block and after the first lockdown in 2020 the City Fitness Block was constructed.  The complex was completed earlier this year with the fit outs for Arena Health Care & MSK Medical Imaging.

Alex said admittedly the last three years had been challenging, and it was still a difficult environment to work in, with increased construction costs, labour shortages and delays in materials, “but we are starting to see things level out now which is good.”

“While a few projects over the last couple of years may have been put on hold, we are still receiving enquires from companies exploring their options.”

However, good things take time and the company’s sub-division has been 15 years in the making.

“It’s nice that it has been quite steady.  There is a lot of investment down here at the moment,” Alex said, talking about Invercargill in general.
