The cycling season is open and the Lumsden community intend to celebrate it with the inaugural Northern Southland Cycle and Celebrate on 12 November.
The event is a family focused one with a competitive twist with three races on the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail covering all fitness levels. The longest race is 62km from Kingston to Lumsden, a 31km race starts in Athol and a 15km race begins at Five Rivers.
Adding to the fun is a gala and market day in Lumsden featuring entertainment from band Elbow Junction, food and craft stalls showcasing local talent.
Crossroad Cycles from Gore have donated a bike. To be eligible to win the bike you must be over eight and complete a short survey about the event. This will be drawn at approximately 2 pm.
Added Energy have also donated a bike and this will be given away in the best dressed bike competition for the under 8’s who have bikes in Lumsden by 12.30pm, judging starts at 1 pm.
Online entries to the event close on Tuesday the 8th of November, then entries are on the day and cash only.
Event organising committee member Kim Spencer-McDonald says the thriving Lumsden community wants Cycle and Celebrate to become a feature on the calendar each year.
“The community would like something for Northern Southland, lots of other places have a special day. We hope this event becomes a celebration of Northern Southland.”
Providing support and assistance to the event organisers is Venture Southland Community Development Planner Steven Watson, he says the community enthusiasm around creating a successful event is inspiring.
“I look forward to the big day and encourage Southlanders to either sign up for one of the races or come along to support competitors and enjoy the entertainment and market day.”
